Turning 65? Here’s How To Get Medicare Ready
If you’re turning 65 this year, we can help you figure out what steps you need to take to get started.
Your first step depends on whether or not you’re already drawing social security or getting benefits from the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB).
If you are already getting benefits from Social Security or the RRB, Medicare will enroll you automatically. Your coverage will start the 1st day of your birthday month*
If you’re close to 65, but NOT getting Social Security or RRB benefits, you’ll need to sign up for Medicare. You can do this by going to your local Social Security Office in person, calling, or using their website. If you worked for a railroad, contact your local RRB.
Your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before your 65th birthday. You can sign up during that
time, during your birthday month, or during the three months after your birthday month. For example, if your birthday is July 20th, you can enroll as early as April**.
What’s the Cost?
PART A
PART B
Most people don’t have a cost for Part A. Those who’ve worked for 10 or more years (40 quarters or more) or are married to someone who did, do not have a Part A cost.
Working for seven and a half years (or thirty quarters) means your monthly premium is $278.
If you worked less than that, you must pay the full cost of the monthly premium which is $518 in 2025.
The monthly premium for Part B in 2025 is $185.00. The premium changes every year, so you should expect increases as time goes on.
If your modified adjusted gross income is above a certain amount, you may pay an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). IRMAA is an extra charge added to your premium.
Often, people will choose to wait to enroll in Part B later if they’re still working and have creditable coverage.
After you sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B, you’ll have the option to enroll in a Medicare Supplement and a Part D Drug plan OR a Medicare Advantage plan. You can also choose to stick with Original Medicare by itself. If you decide to get coverage later, you may pay a late enrollment penalty. While weighing your options, be sure to talk to an agent who can help you assess your situation. They can help you decide which option will be the best for you.
